Terms - What can I put in my skip or bin?

Ensuring that your waste is disposed of correctly is very important to ensure that we can process your waste in a legal and compliant manner, whilst achieving best possible recycling levels and diversion from landfill. Please use this guide to ensure that only the correct waste types are placed in your skip. The most common categories are as follows:

  • Mixed commercial or household waste can consist of household materials such as wood, metals, plastics, furniture or commercial materials such as shelving, fittings and office furniture.
  • Mixed inert waste can consist of hardcore, concrete, bricks, tiles, ceramics, sand, soil and clay. This waste type is not suitable for wheelie bins.
  • Mixed construction and demolition waste can consist of all non-hazardous waste materials found on a building and demolition sites including wood, rigid plastics, plastic sheeting, hardcore, concrete, bricks, upvc, glass, and scrap metal. This waste type is not suitable for wheelie bins.
  • General (unrecoverable) Waste is general commercial or household waste which does not contain any recyclable or recoverable waste and therefore is only suitable for disposal in landfill or refuse derived fuel. Examples of this type of waste include but are not limited to black bag waste, carpets and underlay, rubber, unrecyclable plastics, polystyrene, and insulation. A small amount of these waste types may be allowable within a mixed commercial or mixed household waste skip depending on the percentage of it versus other recoverable waste – please speak to us and we will advise.
  • Dry Mixed Recycling (DMR) waste can consist of paper (office paper, newspaper, magazines etc), cardboard, plastic (bottles, packaging films, cleaned out drinks bottles,  rinsed out microwave meal trays etc), and cans (cleaned out drinks cans and food
tins). General waste should not be placed in containers supplied for recyclable waste.

Hazardous or harmful items must not be placed in your skip. These include but are not limited to TVs, computer monitors, asbestos (sheet and fibrous), tyres (plant and car), fluorescent tubes, fridges, paint and paint tins (unless water based paint tins which are empty and completely dry), plasterboard, batteries, clinical waste, gas cylinders, fire extinguishers, liquids, solvents, oil, petrol, diesel, flammable substances and explosives.

  • Paint tins can only be put in your skip if they are completely empty and free from residue. If there is paint inside the tins, please contact your local council for disposal advice at your local Household Waste Recycling Centre.
  • Mattresses must be disposed of separately from other forms of general waste. As a result, there is an additional cost to processing mattresses, which is not included in the standard price of our skips. If you place a mattress in a skip then you will be charged an additional fee to cover the processing so please speak with us in advance and let us know if you have these items to dispose of.
  • Plasterboard or Gypsum based waste must be kept completely separated from all other waste to ensure that it is disposed of legally in line with current legislation. This is not possible if plasterboard is mixed within other waste in any quantity.
  • Tyres (plant and car) must be disposed of differently to general waste. As a result, there is an additional cost to processing tyres, which is not included in the price of your skip. If you place a tyre in your skip then you will be charged extra. Prices vary by postcode, so please contact us in advance if you would like to know the exact supplement that will be charged per tyre.
  • Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) must not be mixed with other waste streams in skips. This includes fluorescent tubes, batteries, fridges, freezers, air conditioning units, flat screen monitors/TVs and CRT monitors/TVs. We do offer a dedicated WEEE skip /collection service for all types of electrical waste. Please contact us if you would like to know the costs of WEEE disposal.
  • Asbestos (sheet and fibrous) must not put in a standard skip under any circumstances. It is a hazardous material and must be handled accordingly. It cannot be reused or recycled and must be sent for specialist disposal at a licensed hazardous landfill site. Please speak to us for more information if you need to dispose of this material.
  • Upholstery such as chairs, sofas, sofa beds, kitchen and dining room chairs, stools, foot stools, futons, bean bags, floor and sofa cushions, must be kept separate from other waste as the contain what are known as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs). Please let us know if this is a waste type you produce and we can advise on the price and the best method of collection.
